Dreadlock extensions are an easy and versatile way to get one of the best looking dreadlock hairstyles quickly with the least amount of effort and in the shortest possible time frame.

Dreading this way is especially useful if your hair is short but you want to sport the dreadlock style now.

Some people use this method when they are just starting a permanent dreadlock. If you are not sure about the dreadlock hairstyle you could implement it on a temporary basis to have a feel for it. It is a good way to test if you would like the locks of a permanent basis.

The dreadlocks hairstyles can be done with either human or synthetic hair. The stylist would suggest that if you need the best results the dreadlocks should be started on naturally kinky or curly hair.

If your hair is natural, untreated with chemical relaxers, the look of your dreadlock hairstyle would be even better.

If your hair is chemically relaxed then the stylist would normally recommend that the chemically relaxed part of the hair be trimmed before starting the dreadlocks.

This may sometimes leave you with very short hair but the dreadlock extensions will sort that problem.

Wool rubbing is a very simple method of forming dreadlocks– it involves you rubbing your hair with a wool hat or cloth over in circles motion for 15 to 20 minutes or until hair knots or tangles begin to develop.

The loose hair then sticks into the nearest knot to make it neat
The main disadvantage is that it is not neat.

Dread perming is a chemical treatment that is used by beauty salons or do-it-yourselfers to create or maintain dreadlocks hairstyles. This method of dreading the hair is accomplished by exposing the hair chemicals that render the hair frizzy.

The frizzy hair then bounded together and treated to form the dreadlocks.

Dread perms usually often prove to be the easiest and most professional way of creating dreadlock hairstyles. The process can take upwards of six hours to complete, with maintenance appointments being around two hours long.

The dread perming process works especially well on hair that will not naturally dread, especially Caucasian or Asian hair or mixed nation hair.
With this method, no waxing or palm rolling of the hair is necessary although tightening sprays are beneficial for maintenance. A regular six-monthly retouch appointment is all the maintenance required.

How does it work?
The dread perming technique begins with at least 6 inches of hair. The hair is then separated into appropriately sized dreadlock sections. Each individual section is then backcombed, or teased, to knot the hair and create a dreadlock shape.

Depending on the method used, the dreads will either be tightly backcombed or more loosely formed. The new dreadlocks are either permed in as it is, twisted or wrapped around curlers to achieve form.

Once the chemicals are applied to the hair, each strand of hair begins to swell. This swelling causes the hair to forget its original form. The hair then begins to shrink back to its normal size, permanently taking on the shape the hair is currently in.

Dreadlock hairstyles created with a dread perm can take on the shape of the method used to set them- curled if they were wrapped around curlers, twisted or kinky.

The perm also serves to ‘rough up’ Asian or Caucasian hair so that it will more easily tangle. A natural look begins to occur a few months later when the hair loosens somewhat.

Within the time-span of several weeks to months, depending on the setting method, dread-permed dreadlocks will look nearly indistinguishable from naturally grown dreadlocks.

Twisting dreadlock hairstyles are started by twisting the hair then let it grow.

Backcombing dreadlocks is a technique to matte up the hair so as to increase its volume to achieve a fuller hair. This method is normally used on people who have straight hair.

Au Natural dreadlock hairstyles normally take about 6 months to take root and are normally done for religious reason-Where no chemical is added to the hair.
